Recognizing that the Milwaukee Art Museum on Lake Michigan is a beautiful locale to inspire writing, the Milwaukee Writing Project at Carroll University has partnered with the Milwaukee Art Museum to offer unique programs for kindergarten through high school teachers in all content areas.

The first program, "Teachers as Writers, Writing Retreat" was held August 18 and 19, 2008 at the Milwaukee Art Museum.  Using the Museum's collection as inspiration, participants learned specific writing strategies that can both strengthen their personal writing and be implemented in their classrooms.  Teachers had the opportunity to experience the writing process first hand in a supportive environment while working on a personal piece with the group.

The retreat was an overwhelming success.  Enrollment filled to capacity with a waiting list and requests for further programming.  A second retreat was held on February 7 and 21, 2009.  Again participants came with an enthusiasm to write and respond, learning more strategies for integrating writing and visual representation into their curriculum.
At each retreat, teachers had the option of earning one Carroll Graduate Education credit for participation.

Our success at the retreats suggests the prospect of a very promising relationship between the Milwaukee Writing Project at Carroll University and the Milwaukee Art Museum.

Writers Retreats are scheduled for Fall 2009 and Spring 2010.
